    Description

Black & white glossy finish photograph measuring about 3-3/4" x 2-3/4" of my dad, Dick Spencer III. This photo was in scrapbook kept by my mom Jo Anne Spencer. I remember wearing this Eskimo coat as a kid! But it left with dad when he left my mom after a 40-year marriage, along with about everything else he owned. I heard his things got burnt when a fire took a storage building.
Dick finished college at SUI (became University of Iowa). He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Dick became a Cadet Major in ROTC at SUI in Iowa City. Dick trained at Fort Benning and Camp Toccoa, Georgie, North Carolina, Alabama and maneuvers in Tennessee. Dick became a paratrooper with the 517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team during World War II. He was in Italy, France, Germany, Belgium.
He had 94 straight days of combat, mainly at Col de Braus, Maritime Alps, France. 22 battle jumps. They arrived by ship in Europe (Italy) May 1944 and shipped home to USA in the winter of 1945. He was promoted to Captain in October 1945. The 517th disbanded February 1946.
Perfect addition for collections of WWII US Army 517 Paratrooper PRCT memorabilia. A perfect reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who served in the armed forces during WWII, and especially the heroic men of the 517th PRCT.
