Richard Irvine was the head of design for WED Enterprises and a good friend of Herb Ryman. In the 1950’s, Walt Disney hired art director Richard “Dick” Irvine away from 20th Century Fox to design Walt’s Magic Kingdom. Walt Disney Imagineering was formed as the design and engineering arm of the Company charged with developing theme parks. Richard Irvine headed design and planning for all Disneyland attractions. He also guided the creation of attractions featured at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair, including It’s A Small World. Dick went on to help shape the Master Plan and attractions for Walt Disney World and, in 1967, was appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer of WED Enterprises.
Herb had previously done portraits of Dick Irvine’s two daughters & his son. In 1971 The Walt Disney Company honored Richard by christening their newest steamboat, the Richard F. Irvine, and soon after Herb was commissioned to represent the ship on canvas. As Irvine became very ill, Ryman got a call from WED asking if he could finish the painting over the weekend. Herb Ryman completed the painting and he later said bringing it to his freind, Richard, was truly an honor for Herbie.
